MEET THE SALT SQUAD

Alexander | Anna | Benjamin | Britton | Caleb | Diego | Grace | Jouren | Katie | Kei | Rosa | Sofia | Tayler | Yoshi | What’s SALT?

My name is Alexander Roxburgh, I’m 16 years old and am going into grade 11. This summer I have been given the opportunity to join the SALT team at my church. SALT is a leadership program for our youth group. I will be attending Serve early in the summer where I will be participating with around 300 youth from across Canada in Kamloops to serve in local communities. What I am pumped for this summer are all the cool relationships that I will be able to build with youth that are close to my age as well as being able to serve people for God’s Kingdom!

I’ve grown up in a Christian home my whole life but just last summer on June 25 I decided to make my faith my own by getting baptized. Two days later I went to Paraguay with my family and that was a really impactful trip in my life. I have seen God at work on my soccer team, ever since my dad has become the coach there has been a lot less swearing and some hearts are starting to warm up to spiritual conversations. I am very interested in soccer but also any sport in general. Some of my skills that I have acquired over the years are leadership, hardworking, smart, athletic and strong willed.

One thing I would ask is if you could please pray that God would make a big impact in my life and to the lives that I get to serve this summer.

Hi, my name is Anna and I’m 13 years old. I am in grade 8 and this is my first year of high school at Kwantlen Park Secondary. I am still getting used to all the work! My hobbies are dancing and hanging out with my friends from church and school. I have three brothers, one sister and an Australian shepherd puppy named Luka. My favourite novel is Wonder, a book about a boy with a deformity trying to fit in at school for the first time. My favourite foods are sushi and chocolate. I am looking forward to SALT this year. I am participating at SERVE in Kamloops this year, as well as leading the camps. I am excited to learn and grow in faith, and I’m anticipating meeting new friends at serve and I hope to make a difference in peoples lives at camps this summer!

My name is Benjamin Bosnick and I am 13 years old. This year I started high school and it has been awesome so far. I am looking forward to travelling to Albania with the SALT Squad. I am excited to grow in the my faith and leadership and also to travel with the youth. I saw God at work in my past trip to Albania. When I was 10, I was part of a team that went there. I am excited to see what has change since I was there and connect with the people I met and became friends with there. I love to play sports so I hope to play the sports there and teach them new sports.

My favourite Level Ground product: Dried Mangoes.

Hi I am Britton. I am 15 and am in grade 9. I like to hang out with friends outdoor activities like water sports or soccer.

I am apart of the SALT youth group this summer. I am very excited to learn and grow in my faith and to go help serve in a new community. My favorite Bible verse is Philippians 4:13. I like it because it reminds me that God is my Lord and Saviour and I can do all things because of Him and His strength that He gives me. God, I feel, has wanted to use and has gifted me with leadership and willingness to help those in need and has been calling me to be a missionary for His Kingdom. I constantly am reminded by Him that He is with me. My favorite fruit from Level Ground is the dried mango. It tastes natural and is really good.

Hi, my name is Caleb. I have recently turned 15 so woohoo! I’m moving into grade 10 in September. Why I’m on the SALT team? Well, in 2016 I went to Albania with my dad—shout out to Steve—and I found a lot of joy sharing Jesus with the youth.

SALT is a platform that I can use to help others and grow in my faith. God has been working in my life through the people He’s placed to guide me in my faith and He’s been planting the fruits of the Spirit in me. A verse that has impacted me is 1 Corinthians 10:13. This is a powerful verse that shows that God will give you the strength so that you may be able to endure it! My hobbies include being funny (at least I think so), knitting, banjo, theatre, and loving Jesus! Read my blog article “God at Work in Albania” here.

My favourite Level Ground product is the dried dragonfruit. YUM 😛 and I’m so glad to be a part of the SALT team and am looking forward to seeing my Albanian peeps!!!

Hey, my name’s Diego. I’m 15 years old and part of the SALT team. During this summer I’m super excited to go to Albania and make lots of wonderful memories with the whole SALT team.

To go to Albania we’re going to have to raise lots of money. One of my favourite things to raise money is buying the super tasty Level Ground food (I recommend the dried mangos).

My favourite Bible verse is John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” I like that verse because it reminds me that God loves so much that He would send His only Son to save me! Some of my hobbies include rock climbing, playing video games and listening to music. I’m super excited to become a better leader and to help various people over the summer.

Hey! I’m Grace and I’m 15 years old. I will going into grade 10 in the fall. In my spare time I enjoy cooking, being outside, swimming and hanging out with friends. I love playing the ukulele and you can often find me and my sister singing together on her bed.

I’m super excited to be going to SERVE for the second time and getting to help out at a summer camp this summer. I am most looking forward to laughing lots and getting to experience this with a great group of friends.

Another thing that I am really excited about is learning how to be a Godly leader. I hope to use these skills in future in my church, school and general life. I am also excited to grow in a relationship with God and to hear what He wants to say to me.

My favourite Bible verse is Philippians 4:6 because it is a great reminder to always go to God through prayer and to never be anxious.

Hi there! I’m Jouren Wong, I’m 16 years old and going into grade 12 in the fall at Burnaby South Secondary School. You can probably find me on the volleyball court, just drinking some bubble tea or belting out my favourite Taylor Swift song. Being an only child, I’m really looking forward to hanging out with the SALT squad as well as getting to meet the all the youth in Albania. Having seen the work being done in Albania for so long, getting the opportunity to go myself and see what God is doing is such a privilege. I’m very excited for not only Albania, but also for SERVE in Kamloops as it was an incredible experience at Victoria in 2016. God used the worship team at SERVE to inspire me to be a part of the worship team at Southside! One verse that comes to mind in preparation for SALT is Proverbs 3:5-6. Solomon writes of the comfort you can find in the Lord when you place all your trust in him. As someone who likes to be in control and to plan ahead, I have to trust in Him to see what He has in store for me this summer.

Hi my name is Katie. I’m 14 years old and a grade 8 who loves Christ. What excites me about SALT you may ask? Well, I’m very excited to be able to learn and grow with my friends, in my faith, while helping others. I have seen God at work in giving me the opportunity to participate in SALT this year and by showing me that the other important aspects in my life such as soccer, doing well in school are nothing compared to serving our one true Lord.

You may know that SALT has been working with a local fair trade company known as Level Ground to fundraise for our upcoming outreach trips. My favourite Level Ground product are the dried pineapples, since they are rich in flavour and delicious.

I have found that the hymn Great is Thy Faithfulness has impacted my life–“Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning, new mercies I see; all I have needed Thy hand has provided.” Every time I hum or sing this song I’m reminded that God is in control and I have no need to worry about what is to come.

I could not possibly write how excited I’m to participate in SALT this year. We will partake on many adventures together and hope that God will help us to our faith to grow exponentially.

Hi, my name is Kei. I am from Japan. I came to Canada to learn English. I like to play basketball, baseball, soccer, snowboard, tennis and other sports. I’m good so I want to try many sports with you. Also I like to play video game, especially Fortnite! Do you know Ninja? Yes, he is very good. I want to be like him. I’m so happy to have a opportunity to meet you and play with you!!!

My name is Rosa and I am 15 years old and will be going into 10th grade in the fall. I am looking forward to this upcoming season with Amplify and our Salt team, and I believe that God will show himself in many ways. Attending Serve in Victoria in 2016 was a very memorable week for me, serving both others and God by cleaning beaches and doing yard work, and I’m excited to see what God has for us at Serve 2018 in Kamloops. I also can’t wait to travel with the team overseas to Albania and to see how God is at work there.

A scripture that has has an impact on me is found in Colossians 2:6-7 as it talks about how by receiving Jesus into my life, I have obtained strong roots in Him and how I will always be satisfied/fulfilled as I grow in my faith and my relationship with God. I especially find joy serving in the forms of cleaning, lawn mowing, babysitting and doing yard work. My favourite Level Ground product is the dried mangos, but I especially like the stories behind the people who are getting fairly paid to cut, dry and package the fruit.

Hi, my name is Sofia. I’m 13 years old, this is my first year in Amplify and I’m a part of the SALT Squad. It will be my first year of high school next year so I’m a little nervous.

I’m very excited for the up coming SALT events because of all the new experiences and memories I’ll make with all of the SALT people. I will be participating in SERVE in Kamloops and helping in the camps.

My hobbies include singing, painting and playing piano. My favourite Bible verse is Joshua 1:9 because God reminds me that I’m never alone and that with His strength I can face all of my fears.

A few of my goals are to leave a positive mark on the world and to continue growing in my faith.

My favourite Level Ground products are the dry mangoes and the chai tea because mangoes are my favourite fruit and I like tea.

My name is Tayler. I am in grade 9 and age 15. My hobbies and interests are fishing, sports, especially volleyball, and skiing. Bible verses that have impacted me are Psalm 23 and 50. These verses impact me because of there meaning and power that I get out of these verses. They remind me of who God is and how righteous and powerful He is. I am a part of the SALT team and am going to SERVE, helping out with camps, and going to Albania this summer.

I am excited for SALT because all the opportunities and trips we get to go on and also to grow in faith and leadership/helping others. I have seen God at work in my life last summer as I got to go to Paraguay. We got to help others and through that experience I feel God has instilled in me to live the way the people live and treat others in Paraguay. They care for others more than themselves so I feel God has taught me how I should caring for others not myself. My favourite Level Ground product is the dried fruit.

My name is Yoshifumi. Please call me Yoshi. I came from Japan to Canada this April to learn English. My favourite things to do in Japan are eating Japanese foods and playing baseball. However, baseball is not that common in Canada, so I decided to set up a baseball team in our school. Fortunately, I succeeded to make a baseball team. Unfortunately, our baseball team is very bad because we don’t have enough people or time to practice. But I want our team to start winning baseball games, so I’m practicing very hard to become better at baseball. Also, I want to make many Canadian friends through playing baseball. All my classmates are staying with their homestay family. I’m so glad to be able to spend a whole year with my homestay family because they are awesome. I have very good times with my Canadian family. I hope to see all the amazing things that Canada has to offer. I’m looking forward to many things this year. Also, I want to make lots of memories in Canada.
