In the book of Acts, Jesus tells his disciples that they are to be his witnesses in all the world. That is, they are to speak and act in a way that points toward the good news of Jesus Christ, not as a specialized or “religious” activity, but as a part of the whole of their lives. In Luke 10, Jesus gives a picture of what bearing witness might look like. He sends the disciples out to eat with people, to heal the sick who are present and to announce that, “the Kingdom of God has come near.”
The arts help us in this imaginative and theological work. Like last spring, we will each choose from among three different activities to risk imagining and expressing the presence of God’s kingdom in our concrete lives.
We will offer space for three different types of creative expression:
- Photography. No need for a fancy-shmancy camera. We will begin with some instruction on the art of photography, and then we will go out in the community to take pictures.
- Poetry. No need for a goatee or tweed jacket. We will begin with some simple instructions on parts of a poem and working with metaphors and then we will work on a group Psalm together.
- Crafts and/or Mosaic (Tactile Art). No need for a block of granite and a chisel. We will begin with some ideas and simple media and then work together to create a visual and/or 3D piece of art.
Pre-registered childcare is available and lunch will be provided.
Bring pen & pencil, bible and $3 to contribute to lunch.
